A physics/chemistry major, Kathy left West Virginia University at the end of her sophomore year to pursue a career in Nashville.

A two-time Grammy award winner, advocate/activist, and (Cross Lanes) West Virginia native, Kathy was twice named Female Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association, had four #1 hits, and numerous songs in the Top 10. She received the Minnie Pearl Humanitarian Award in 2001 and returned to WVU in 2007 to receive a Doctorate of Humane Letters. Currently, Mattea hosts Mountain Stage.
